Kristine Haglund: Science Was in Her Future
When Kris Haglund was young, she had no idea what she wanted to be. She certainly didn't imagine becoming an archivist for a natural history and science museum, let alone Chair of the Museum's Bailey Library and Archives. In fact, in the seventh grade her science teacher had to beg and plead for her to dissect a frog, and in high school she avoided science classes whenever possible.
But once Kris decided what she wanted to do with her life, the Denver Museum of Nature & Science was the place where she wanted to work. Its excellent reputation, its accessibility to the community, and the passion of its staff, board of trustees, and volunteers all attracted her. According to Kris, "for more than 35 years, these are the things that have kept me coming to work each day."
They are also the reasons why she has decided to support the Museum into the future. "I've often wished that I was wealthy enough to give major financial support to the Museum, but I feel good that I am able to support the Museum beyond my lifetime through a planned gift," Kris said.
Kris considers science education increasingly important to the community and the nation. "I want to see the Museum continue to play a leading role in enticing new generations of children into the study of ancient life forms, geological history, our environment, human cultures, human health, and outer space," she said. "These kids are our future and they should have the advantages that the Museum provides to interact with real objects and knowledgeable experts—where they can get excited about science."
Based on her experience, Kris knows that although we might not see ourselves as scientists, we all have the potential to understand and enjoy science. With her future gift, she hopes to inspire and excite generations of youngsters, offering them opportunities to pursue their dreams and interests at the Museum.
